Murphy the Rescue Dog

Students in Ms. Fisher’s third grade class had a very special, and very furry, visitor - a rescue puppy named Murphy.
Every year, Ms. Fisher shares her passion for animal rescue with her classes, and together they work on a project called their "class puppy". They discuss the responsibility of owning animals, caring for them correctly, and what it means to rescue an animal. During these lessons, the classes "foster" a puppy from a local rescue.

This year they worked with A Lab For Life rescue, a volunteer based rescue that pulls Labrador Retriever mixes from rural shelters and adopts them out to the North Eastern states. Classes observe their puppy virtually through a camera during independent work or group work, a chance for them to watch as the animal's habits and personality grows.

When the puppy is adopted, Ms. Fisher throws an adoption party and the animal visits to say goodbye. They send letters and pictures of the puppy to its adopters detailing what their puppy is like, how to care for them, and thank them for choosing to rescue them.
